Unique Australian Shepherd Traits

Working Heritage

Australian Shepherds are herding dogs with high energy levels and strong work drive. Breeding pairs should exhibit proper herding instincts without excessive aggression.

Coat Variations

Four recognized colors: Blue Merle, Red Merle, Black, and Red. Merle to merle breeding is prohibited due to increased risk of blindness and deafness in puppies.

Eye Color Diversity

Australian Shepherds can have brown, blue, amber, or heterochromia (different colored eyes). All are acceptable in the breed standard.

Natural Bob Tail Gene

Some Australian Shepherds are born with naturally bobbed tails. Breeding two natural bobtails can result in spinal defects - genetic testing recommended.

IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION

Australian Shepherd Health Considerations

Comprehensive health testing is mandatory before breeding to ensure healthy puppies

Hip Dysplasia

Moderate Risk

OFA or PennHIP testing required before breeding. Both parents should have good or excellent ratings.

Elbow Dysplasia

Moderate Risk

OFA elbow evaluation recommended for all breeding dogs.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

Moderate Risk

Annual CERF eye examination required. Genetic testing available.

Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)

Moderate Risk

Genetic testing available and highly recommended for all breeding pairs.

MDR1 Gene Mutation

High Risk

Genetic testing required - affects drug sensitivity. Critical for Australian Shepherds.

Epilepsy

Moderate Risk

No genetic test available. Avoid breeding dogs with seizure history or affected relatives.

Cataracts

Low-Moderate Risk

Annual eye examinations. Can be hereditary or environmental.

Autoimmune Disorders

Low-Moderate Risk

Monitor family history. Includes thyroiditis and other conditions.

Critical: MDR1 Gene Mutation Warning

Approximately 50% of Australian Shepherds carry the MDR1 gene mutation, which causes severe reactions to common medications including ivermectin, loperamide, and certain anesthetics. MDR1 testing is absolutely mandatory before breeding. Never breed two MDR1 affected dogs together.

Australian Shepherd Breeding Guidelines

Follow these essential guidelines for responsible Australian Shepherd breeding

Optimal Breeding Age

Male Australian Shepherds

2 to 8 years

Female Australian Shepherds

2 to 6 years

Both males and females should wait until at least 2 years for full maturity and proper health testing. This ensures physical and mental maturity before breeding.

Health Testing Requirements

  • Hip X-rays (OFA or PennHIP) - Required
  • Elbow X-rays (OFA) - Highly recommended
  • Eye Examination (CERF/OFA) - Annual testing required
  • MDR1 Gene Testing - Mandatory for breed
  • CEA/CH Genetic Testing - Highly recommended
  • Optional: Thyroid panel, cardiac evaluation

All health tests should be completed before breeding. MDR1 testing is critical for Australian Shepherds.

Breeding Frequency

Females: No more than once per year, maximum 3-4 litters lifetime

Minimum 12 months between litters, skip heat cycles for recovery

Quality over quantity - focus on health, temperament, and breed improvement

Additional Breeding Considerations

  • Merle Breeding Warning: Never breed two merle dogs together. This can result in double merle puppies with severe health issues including blindness and deafness.
  • Working Ability: Australian Shepherds should maintain their herding instincts. Consider temperament testing and herding instinct tests.
  • Exercise Requirements: Ensure potential puppy owners understand the high exercise and mental stimulation needs of this breed.
  • Early Socialization: Australian Shepherd puppies require extensive socialization between 3-14 weeks to prevent shyness or reactivity.
