Unique Bloodhound Traits

World's Best Tracking Nose

With 300 million scent receptors, Bloodhounds have the most accurate scenting ability of any breed. Breeding should maintain this extraordinary trait.

Distinctive Wrinkles & Dewlap

Loose skin helps trap scent particles. However, excessive wrinkles can cause health issues. Balance function with health.

Independent Nature

Bred to follow scents independently. Can be stubborn and single-minded. Not ideal for first-time owners - screen buyers carefully.

Drooling & Maintenance

Significant drooling is breed characteristic. Requires dedicated owners willing to manage slobber and maintain wrinkles and ears daily.

CRITICAL HEALTH INFORMATION

Bloodhound Health Considerations

Bloodhounds face numerous health challenges requiring extensive testing and careful breeding decisions

Bloat (GDV)

High Risk

Deep-chested breed at extreme risk. Prophylactic gastropexy strongly recommended. Feed multiple small meals, avoid exercise after eating.

Hip Dysplasia

High Risk

OFA or PennHIP testing mandatory. Large breed with high incidence. Both parents should have good or excellent ratings.

Elbow Dysplasia

High Risk

OFA elbow evaluation mandatory. Common in large breeds, can cause severe lameness.

Eye Problems (Ectropion/Entropion)

High Risk

Annual eye exams required. Droopy eyes prone to infections. Breed for proper eye conformation, not excessive wrinkles.

Ear Infections

High Risk

Long, heavy ears trap moisture. Weekly cleaning essential. Chronic infections can lead to deafness.

Skin Fold Dermatitis

High Risk

Excessive wrinkles trap bacteria. Select for moderate wrinkles. Daily cleaning of folds required.

Cardiac Issues

Moderate Risk

Annual cardiac evaluation recommended. Dilated cardiomyopathy can occur in the breed.

Hypothyroidism

Moderate Risk

Annual thyroid panel recommended. Can affect metabolism and coat quality.

Critical: Extreme Bloat Risk

Bloodhounds have one of the highest rates of bloat (GDV) of any breed. This life-threatening condition can kill within hours. Prophylactic gastropexy is strongly recommended for all breeding dogs. Educate all puppy buyers about bloat prevention: no exercise for 1 hour before/after meals, multiple small meals, elevated feeding, and recognizing symptoms. Consider requiring gastropexy in your puppy contracts.

Bloodhound Breeding Guidelines

Follow these essential guidelines for responsible Bloodhound breeding

Optimal Breeding Age

Male Bloodhounds

2 to 7 years

Female Bloodhounds

2 to 6 years

Wait until at least 2 years for complete skeletal maturity and health testing. Giant breeds mature slowly.

Health Testing Requirements

  • Hip X-rays (OFA or PennHIP) - MANDATORY
  • Elbow X-rays (OFA) - MANDATORY
  • Eye Examination (CERF/OFA) - Annual requirement
  • Cardiac evaluation - Highly recommended
  • Thyroid panel - Recommended annually
  • Consider gastropexy before breeding
  • Temperament evaluation - Important for this independent breed

Bloodhounds have significant health challenges. Comprehensive testing is essential for ethical breeding.

Breeding Frequency

Females: No more than once per year, maximum 3 litters lifetime

Minimum 18 months between litters

Large litters common (8-10 puppies). Whelping can be difficult due to puppy size

Additional Breeding Considerations

  • Whelping Space: Large breed requires significant space. Puppies grow rapidly and need room to develop properly.
  • Early Scent Introduction: Begin scent games at 3 weeks to develop tracking abilities. This is crucial for maintaining breed purpose.
  • Buyer Screening: Bloodhounds are not for everyone. Require fenced yards, experience with large breeds, and commitment to exercise and grooming.
  • Working Ability: Consider tracking tests for breeding stock. Maintaining the breed's legendary scenting ability should be a priority.
