Unique Brittany Traits

Versatile Hunting Dog

Originally bred for bird hunting. Excels at pointing and retrieving. Breeding should maintain strong hunting instincts and stamina.

Compact Sporting Breed

Smallest of the sporting spaniels. Leggy and agile build allows all-day hunting. Avoid breeding for overly heavy or cobby types.

Natural or Docked Tail

Some born with naturally short tails (genetic bobtail). Tail docking becoming less common. Natural tails are perfectly acceptable.

High Energy Requirements

Needs 1-2 hours vigorous exercise daily. Without adequate exercise becomes hyperactive and destructive. Screen homes carefully.

HEALTH INFORMATION

Brittany Health Considerations

Brittanys are generally healthy dogs, but responsible breeding requires comprehensive health testing

Hip Dysplasia

Moderate Risk

OFA or PennHIP testing required. Both parents should have good or excellent ratings for this active sporting breed.

Epilepsy

Moderate Risk

No genetic test available. Common in the breed. Never breed dogs with seizure history or affected relatives.

Canine Discoid Lupus Erythematosus

Low-Moderate Risk

Autoimmune condition affecting the nose. More common in Brittanys than other breeds. Check for family history.

Eye Problems (Lens Luxation)

Low-Moderate Risk

Annual CERF eye examinations required. Genetic testing available for primary lens luxation.

Hypothyroidism

Low-Moderate Risk

Annual thyroid panel recommended. Can affect metabolism, coat quality, and reproduction.

Hip Necrosis (Legg-Calvé-Perthes)

Low Risk

More common in smaller dogs. Causes hip degeneration. X-rays can detect early changes.

Complement Deficiency

Low Risk

Rare inherited immune disorder specific to Brittanys. Affected dogs prone to infections.

Elbow Dysplasia

Low Risk

Less common than hip dysplasia but still test. Important for this active hunting breed.

Important: Preserve Working Ability

Brittanys are premier hunting dogs bred for all-day fieldwork. While health testing is crucial, equally important is maintaining their hunting instincts and athletic ability. Consider field trials, hunt tests, or at minimum, evaluate natural pointing and retrieving instincts in breeding stock. A Brittany that cannot work in the field for extended periods is not maintaining breed purpose. Select breeding partners who demonstrate both sound health AND working ability.

Brittany Breeding Guidelines

Follow these essential guidelines for responsible Brittany breeding

Optimal Breeding Age

Male Brittanys

2 to 8 years

Female Brittanys

2 to 7 years

Wait until full physical and mental maturity. Brittanys mature relatively early but still benefit from waiting until 2 years.

Health Testing Requirements

  • Hip X-rays (OFA or PennHIP) - MANDATORY
  • Eye Examination (CERF/OFA) - Annual requirement
  • Thyroid panel - Recommended annually
  • Elbow X-rays (OFA) - Recommended
  • Primary Lens Luxation genetic test - Recommended
  • Cardiac evaluation - Optional but advised
  • Hunting/field ability test - Important for breed purpose

Brittanys are generally healthy but maintaining their working ability is as important as health testing.

Breeding Frequency

Females: No more than once per year, maximum 4 litters lifetime

Skip at least one heat cycle between litters

Focus on quality hunting dogs that can work all day in the field

Additional Breeding Considerations

  • Exercise Requirements: Brittany puppies need controlled exercise to develop properly. Too much too soon can damage growing joints. Educate puppy buyers on appropriate exercise.
  • Dual-Purpose Dogs: Many Brittanys excel in both field trials and show ring. Consider breeding dogs that maintain both conformation and working ability.
  • Socialization Critical: Brittanys can be shy if not properly socialized. Implement comprehensive puppy socialization program starting at 3 weeks.
  • Color Considerations: Orange and white or liver and white are standard. Tricolor is acceptable. Black is a disqualification - never breed black Brittanys.
