Exceptional Intelligence

Ranked 2nd smartest breed. Need mental stimulation or become destructive. Excel at obedience, agility, therapy work.

IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION

Poodle Health Considerations

Poodles face size-specific health challenges requiring comprehensive testing across all varieties

Hip Dysplasia

Moderate-High (Standard) Risk

OFA or PennHIP testing MANDATORY for Standards. Common in larger Poodles. Both parents must have good/excellent ratings.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

Moderate Risk

Genetic test MANDATORY (prcd-PRA). Causes blindness. All sizes affected. Test all breeding stock. Two carriers should never be bred.

Bloat (GDV)

High (Standard) Risk

Deep-chested Standards at high risk. Can kill within hours. Feed multiple small meals. Consider prophylactic gastropexy.

Sebaceous Adenitis

Moderate Risk

Skin disease causing hair loss. More common in Standards. Skin biopsy test available. Check family history carefully.

Addison's Disease

Moderate Risk

Adrenal gland disorder. Life-threatening if untreated. More common in Standards. Requires lifelong medication. Check bloodlines.

Epilepsy

Moderate Risk

Idiopathic seizures common in breed. Usually appears by age 3. No genetic test. Check family history for seizures.

Patellar Luxation

High (Toy/Miniature) Risk

Very common in smaller Poodles. OFA patella evaluation MANDATORY for Toys and Miniatures. Can require expensive surgery.

Von Willebrand's Disease

Low-Moderate Risk

Bleeding disorder. Genetic test available. Can be fatal during surgery. Test all breeding stock.

Critical: Size-Specific Health Issues

Each Poodle size has different primary health concerns:

  • Standard Poodles: Hip dysplasia, bloat, sebaceous adenitis, Addison's disease
  • Miniature Poodles: Patellar luxation, PRA, epilepsy, dental disease
  • Toy Poodles: Patellar luxation, hypoglycemia, dental disease, tracheal collapse

NEVER breed between sizes - it creates unpredictable health issues. "Moyen" or "Klein" Poodles (between Miniature and Standard) are not recognized in the US. Each size should be bred to improve that specific variety.

Grooming Reality Check

Poodles require professional grooming every 4-6 weeks costing $75-200+ per session. Daily brushing is MANDATORY to prevent painful matting. Many "doodle" buyers get Poodles thinking they're low-maintenance - they're NOT. Hair grows into ear canals requiring regular plucking. Teeth need frequent cleaning due to hair trapping food. This is a HIGH-MAINTENANCE breed despite not shedding. Educate all buyers about grooming commitment or dogs will suffer.

Poodle Breeding Guidelines

Follow these essential guidelines for responsible Poodle breeding

Optimal Breeding Age

Male Poodles

2 to 8 years

Female Poodles

2 to 7 years

Standards mature slower than Toys/Miniatures. Wait for complete health testing. Size impacts maturity rate.

Health Testing Requirements

  • Hip X-rays (OFA or PennHIP) - MANDATORY for Standards
  • Eye Examination (CERF/OFA) - Annual requirement ALL sizes
  • prcd-PRA genetic test - MANDATORY ALL sizes
  • Patellar luxation (OFA) - MANDATORY for Toys/Miniatures
  • Von Willebrand's genetic test - Highly recommended
  • Thyroid panel - Recommended
  • Sebaceous Adenitis biopsy - Recommended for Standards
  • Neonatal Encephalopathy test - For Standards

Poodles require extensive health testing. Different sizes have different primary concerns.

Breeding Frequency

Females: Maximum once per year, 3-4 litters lifetime

Skip at least one heat cycle between litters

Quality over quantity. Focus on health and temperament regardless of size

Additional Breeding Considerations

  • Color Genetics: Many colors possible. Red and apricot fade with age. Parti-colors gaining popularity. Some colors linked to skin issues.
  • Exercise Requirements: Very active breed needing 1-2 hours daily exercise. Standards need more than Toys. Mental stimulation essential.
  • Training Essential: Intelligence means they learn bad habits quickly. Need consistent training from puppyhood. Can become neurotic without structure.
  • Doodle Epidemic: Poodles extensively crossbred for "doodles". Maintain breed purity. Educate about unpredictable doodle coats and temperaments.
